Kiev, September 8 (IANS). Russia has attacked the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine. At least five people were killed in this attack.
Donetsk Governor Vadim Filyashkin said on Saturday that three people were killed and four injured in the town of Kostyantynivka. Meanwhile, two men in their 50s were reportedly killed in Russian shelling in the town of Toretsk, some 20 kilometres (10 miles) south-east.
Vadim Filyashkin said in a post on the Telegram social media channel that three people aged 24 to 69 were killed in the attack on Kostyantynivka and a multi-storey block, administrative building and shop were damaged. Three other people were treated for minor injuries.
The fourth injured person was a 57-year-old woman, Suspilne public broadcaster quoted Donetsk prosecutor’s office spokeswoman Anastasia Medvedeva as saying. It added that a 52-year-old man and a 53-year-old man were killed in separate shelling just outside Toretsk.
Earlier, about 70 thousand people lived in the city of Kostyantynivka and it was an industrial city. But after the war between Russia and Ukraine started, the city became deserted. Many people were forced to leave it. This city has been attacked by bombs and missiles from Russia.
Authorities ordered the mandatory evacuation of families with children from the city in August, as the threat increased with the advance of Russian troops.
The air force said on Saturday that Ukraine has increased air security to protect against Russian drone attacks. At the same time, 67 long-range Russian drones have also been shot down.
The Russian Defence Ministry said on Saturday that its forces had captured the village of Kalinov, just 25km southeast of Pokrovsk, a key supply and logistics hub for Ukraine’s frontline troops.
