Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and Ludhiana West MLA Gurpreet Bassi Gogi died after being shot. Police on Saturday said it could be a case of “accidental firing” from Bassi’s own licensed pistol.
Joint Commissioner of Police Jaskaran Singh Teja said that the bullet hit Gogi in his temple and he was taken to the local Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), where doctors declared him brought dead. Teja told that the incident happened at Gogi’s house at around 11:30 pm. Teja told that the bullet was fired from Gogi’s licensed pistol.
“According to Gogi’s family members, the bullet was fired accidentally,” he said. Police said the body has been kept in the DMCH mortuary, the case is being investigated and a post-mortem will be conducted for details. Many leaders have expressed grief over Gogi’s death. They are reaching his residence to express condolences.
Former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal expressed grief over the untimely demise of Ludhiana MLA Gurpreet Gogi Bassi. Kejriwal said that he was very sad to know about Gogi’s demise. AAP Punjab unit president Aman Arora posted on ‘X’, “My deepest condolences to the bereaved family in this difficult time. May God grant peace to the departed soul.” Hours before his death, Gogi had held a meeting with Assembly Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan and AAP MP Balbir Singh Seechewal on the issue of cleaning ‘Buddha Nala’.
Gogi joined AAP after leaving Congress in the year 2022. He had defeated two-time MLA Bharat Bhushan Ashu from Ludhiana West seat in the state assembly elections that year. His wife Sukhchain Kaur Gogi had contested the municipal corporation elections last month but lost the election.
