Kabul, October 1 (IANS). Afghanistan’s power company ‘Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat’ has signed three Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with domestic companies for the generation of 240 MW power. The company gave this information in a statement.
The MoUs were signed at a ceremony in the capital Kabul, Xinhua news agency reported. Acting Deputy Prime Minister for Political Affairs Mawlawi Abdul Kabir, government officials and representatives of private companies attended the occasion.
Based on the signed MoUs, two companies will produce 100 MW of solar power power and one company will produce 40 MW of power from coal in the capital.
Afghanistan is facing electricity shortage. It imports most of its electricity from neighboring countries including Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Iran.
Earlier, a newly constructed dam in Zabul province of southern Afghanistan was formally inaugurated on Thursday.
Built in two years at a cost of 127 million Afghani (about US$1.84 million) on the outskirts of the provincial capital Kalat, the dam will irrigate 560 hectares of land and provide electricity to nearby villages.
According to the report of Xinhua news agency, the water supply network and water filtration plant were inaugurated in Kabul only last month. Afghanistan’s Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development said that 10 water supply projects have started functioning in East Paktia province.
In efforts to rebuild Afghanistan, the Afghan caretaker government has launched a series of development and infrastructure projects, including dams, water canals, highways, roads and solar energy systems since taking power three years ago.
