Chennai, 25 December (IANS). Top officials of the Tamil Nadu unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party will hold a meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah on December 27. This is being considered as the first step towards preparation for the assembly elections to be held in the state in the year 2026.
BJP could not even open its account in Tamil Nadu in the Lok Sabha elections held this year. Therefore, he has already started preparations for the assembly elections. Amit Shah is expected to take feedback from senior party leaders about possible alliances for the upcoming assembly elections.
BJP currently has four MLAs in the Tamil Nadu Assembly. It is believed that it had got these seats also due to its alliance with AIADMK in the last assembly elections, which has now broken.
During his visit, Amit Shah will also likely attend the first death anniversary celebrations of DMDK founder and Tamil film icon Captain Vijayakanth on December 28.
The news of the Union Home Minister’s participation in this program has heated up discussions in political circles. This could have far-reaching implications for BJP’s alliances in the state.
In the Lok Sabha elections this year, the DMDK had allied with the AIADMK and its candidate lost the Virudhunagar seat to Congress leader Manickam Tagore by a margin of just 4,379 votes.
Analysts suggest that if the BJP had been part of the AIADMK-led alliance, the alliance could have won many key seats in Tamil Nadu.
According to BJP sources, Amit Shah will reach Chennai on the evening of 27th December. He will hold a closed-door meeting with senior BJP leaders to discuss the current political scenario, organizational elections and strategies for the 2026 assembly elections.
The next day on December 28, he will visit Tiruvannamalai, a city famous for its spiritual importance, where he will inaugurate the newly constructed BJP district headquarters.
The move is being seen as part of the BJP’s efforts to strengthen its hold in the region.
Later, the Union Home Minister will visit the Arunachaleshwar Temple along with senior party officials.
After his programs in Tiruvannamalai, Home Minister Shah will return to Chennai and from there leave for New Delhi.
Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu Congress unit has announced a protest by showing black flags against Amit Shah’s visit. The party says the Union Home Minister will be opposed for his controversial comments about Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar.
State Congress President K. Selvaperunthagai said on his official
“Let us all who believe in democracy and the Indian Constitution unite,” Selvaperunthagai wrote in his post.
