Assam News Desk !!! The Assam government has abolished the two-hour Jumma holiday usually given on Fridays to increase productivity. Employees were given two hours leave to offer Jumma Namaz. The decision was taken on the last day of the current session of the Assam Assembly, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday praised the administration for ‘removing another relic of colonial burden’. CM Himanta Biswa Sarma praised the decision and wrote on X, “With the aim of increasing the productivity of the Assam Legislative Assembly, the rule of adjourning the House for 2 hours every Friday for Jumma to remove the colonial burden of the state has been abolished. This practice was started in 1937 by Syed Saadullah of the Muslim League.”

Announcing the government’s decision, Assam minister Pijush Hazarika said, “An important milestone in regaining true secularism in Assam. The Assam Assembly has extended the duration of Jumma Namaz by 2 hours every Friday from today.” The bill was introduced by Saadullah’s Muslim League government in colonial Assam. The decision comes at a time when the Assam Land and Revenue Regulation (Second Amendment) Bill has been passed by the state assembly to notify ‘heritage belts and blocks’ around certain historical structures in the state.
Earlier, the Assam Assembly on Thursday passed a bill on compulsory government registration of Muslim marriages and divorces. The Assam Muslim Marriage and Divorce Compulsory Registration Bill, 2024 was introduced by Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Jogen Mohan on Tuesday. Responding to questions, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said all previous registrations done by the Kazis will remain valid and only new marriages will come under the purview of the law. “We are not interfering at all with marriages solemnized under Islamic customs under Muslim Personal Law. Our only condition is that marriages will not be registered under Islamic law,” he said. Sarma said the implementation of this new law will put a complete stop to child marriage registrations. The ‘Object and Reason’ of the bill states that it is proposed to prevent child marriages and marriages without the consent of both parties.
