Assam: Two NDA candidates were elected unopposed Rajya Sabha members

Two candidates of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) have been elected unopposed to Rajya Sabha from BJP’s Kanad Purkayastha and Birendra Prasad Bashy of Assam Gana Parishad. An official gave this information on Friday.

He said that opposition parties did not field any candidate for the Rajya Sabha elections.

The last date for filing nomination was Thursday.

The official said, “BJP’s Kanad Purashastha and Birendra Prasad Baishya of the Assam Gana Parishad (AGP) have been declared unopposed to the Rajya Sabha, as there is no opposition candidate.”

The elections for both the Rajya Sabha seat were to be held on June 19.

Purakayastha became a Rajya Sabha member for the first time.

He is the son of senior BJP leader and former Union Minister Kabindra Purkayastha and comes from Silchar.

Kanad Purakayastha is currently the secretary of the BJP’s state unit.

Senior AGP leader and former Union Minister Bashy will be a member of Rajya Sabha for the third time. He has also been a Lok Sabha member. Baiyya and BJP’s Ranjan Das’s term ended on June 14, elections were to be held for two Rajya Sabha seats in Assam.

Assam has seven Rajya Sabha seats, out of which four are with BJP and one seat each has its colleague AGP and UPPL. Independent MPs are representing one seat.
