In the last five years, former cabinet minister Satyendar Jain was the longest imprisonment among all the leaders of Aam Aadmi Party. He was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in May 2022. He was accused of hawala. He has spent more than two years in jail without bail, hearing or trial. Jain had no political career before being an MLA three times from Shakur Basti, he was a architect by profession who joined him after being influenced by the Anna movement. Due to benign image and popularity, some people are also describing him as a strong contender for the post of Chief Minister, although the hearing of the trial against him is still pending. Nevertheless, he is engaged in campaigning with full force. In the midst of the election, Jain filed a defamation case against BJP MP flute Swaraj, which is to be heard on 1 February just before the voting. Meanwhile, during his campaign in his Shakur Basti Assembly, he is just telling people to vote for a good candidate. While leaving for a public meeting in Meerabagh, Abhishek Srivastava had a brief conversation with Satyendra Jain.
This time what is the assessment of the Aam Aadmi Party for the Delhi Assembly elections?
The atmosphere in my Shakur Basti Assembly is better than 2020. The electoral atmosphere in the whole of Delhi is also better than 2020.
What is the reason for you in Delhi?
There are many reasons for this. One is that we have done a lot of work in Delhi and work is becoming better day by day. What happened along with the work that he arrested me two and a half years ago, then Manish ji, then Arvind ji, he arrested everyone. After arresting us, this is not that the BJP has done some work. Public work has never been done. So the public started saying that if you arrested them, then you have done some work. Didn’t even do the work? So the public came to know that we will do the work, no one will do it. To do politics, they have chosen the seats of the Lok Sabha, they have to fight, to die, but now they also need people to work, ie, which can work. That is, a government working in Delhi is needed. People trust Kejriwal for him, Kejriwal’s MLA trusts.
This time the BJP is putting a lot of strength, restless. How do you see his situation?
Look, everyone says before the election. He is their positioning. Last time he used to say that BJP will get 42 seats. Eight seats came. So this time, put a fifth of whatever they are saying. One-fifth will come.
Whatever happened to you, arrests have been created by everyone, has there been sympathy among the people or has any adverse effects? What is the perception of voters according to you?
This is going against BJP. The British did not even atrocities so much. Made such cases and put them in jails, which have not yet been charged. If you are not frameing the charge in eight-eight years and putting people in jail, then this is not a way. In this way, you hold anyone and put them in jail for a lifetime, say we are trial. Oho? If someone wants to put it in jail, is this method a few? Your political rivals are, the enemies of the country are few brothers.
What is the Status of your case right now?
The case has not started yet. Nothing has started yet. All is going on, but the status of the case is still silent.
Do you have any fear that you can be sent to jail again after the election?
Look, we are paying attention to work. They focus on their work, we are focusing on our work.
