Delhi’s new CM Atishi: The speculations going on for the last two days regarding the new Chief Minister of Delhi have now come to an end. After the announcement of resignation of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Atishi Marlena has been elected as the new Chief Minister of Delhi in the meeting of Aam Aadmi Party MLAs today. Arvind Kejriwal himself proposed Atishi’s name which was passed unanimously. She is the heaviest minister in the Kejriwal cabinet and her name was leading among the contenders for the post of Chief Minister.
Atishi has been considered very close to Arvind Kejriwal and former Deputy CM Manish Sisodia. Atishi, who was elected MLA from Kalkaji for the first time in 2020 and became a minister last year, has reached the seat of Chief Minister in a very short time. Another notable thing is that she will be the third woman Chief Minister of Delhi. Before her, Sushma Swaraj in BJP rule and Sheila Dixit in Congress rule have held the responsibility of the post of Chief Minister of Delhi.
Aatish’s political graph rose rapidly
Atishi, who studied at Delhi’s St. Stephen’s College and Oxford University, has risen rapidly in political graph. If we talk about her political career, she has been associated with the Aam Aadmi Party since its inception. AAP contested the Delhi Assembly elections for the first time in 2013 and at that time Atishi was a key member of the party’s manifesto drafting committee. Aam Aadmi Party has been calling Atishi a committed worker of the party. The party believes that Atishi has played an important role in deciding the party’s policies since the beginning of the party’s formation.
The journey from MLA to Chief Minister in just 4 years
She contested the assembly elections for the first time in 2020. The party gave her a ticket from Kalkaji assembly constituency and she won this election. In this way, within 4 years, Atishi has reached from MLA to the post of Chief Minister. Currently, she is an important member of the party’s Political Affairs Committee (PAC). The party also entrusted her with the responsibility of in-charge of East Delhi Lok Sabha constituency. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, she contested from East Delhi Lok Sabha seat but she had to face defeat from BJP candidate and cricketer Gautam Gambhir. She had to face defeat by 4.77 lakh votes.
This is why Atishi got political heights
After Atishi won the assembly elections, such political circumstances arose that she became stronger. In fact, first Deputy CM Manish Sisodia was arrested in the Delhi liquor scam and later Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal also reached Tihar Jail on charges of the same scam. Arvind Kejriwal had reshuffled his cabinet on March 8 last year and during this time Atishi was sworn in as a cabinet minister.
Due to the arrest of Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia, Atishi’s role in the Delhi cabinet became the most important. Kejriwal had given her the responsibility of most departments. Kejriwal had also nominated Atishi to hoist the tricolor on 15 August this year. However, Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena rejected his proposal. By the way, this step of Kejriwal can be understood that how much importance he has been giving to Atishi.
Sushma Swaraj was the first woman CM of Delhi
Atishi will be the third woman Chief Minister of Delhi after BJP’s stalwart Sushma Swaraj and Congress leader Sheila Dixit. Sushma Swaraj took charge of Delhi as a woman Chief Minister in 1998. In fact, due to the steep rise in onion prices, the then Chief Minister of Delhi Sahib Singh Verma had to resign from his post. The top leadership of BJP had handed over the responsibility of the post of Chief Minister to Sushma Swaraj just before the assembly elections.
However, Sushma Swaraj could remain in the post of Chief Minister for only 52 days. During the assembly elections, BJP had to face a huge defeat due to which Sushma Swaraj lost the post of Chief Minister. BJP, which had won 49 seats in 1993, was reduced to just 15 seats in the 1998 assembly elections.
Sheila Dixit was the Chief Minister for 15 consecutive years
After the big victory of Congress in the 1998 assembly elections, the Congress leadership handed over the command of the Chief Minister’s post to Sheila Dikshit. After this, Congress was successful in achieving a big victory in the 2003 assembly elections as well. In that election, Congress won 47 seats and BJP won only 20 seats. In 2003 too, the Congress leadership expressed confidence in Sheila Dikshit.
After this, Congress was successful in winning the 2008 assembly elections. In the 2008 elections, Congress won 43 seats while BJP could only reach 23 seats. In 2008 too, Sheila Dikshit was given the command of the Chief Minister’s post and in this way she remained the Chief Minister of Delhi for 15 consecutive years.
Now Delhi’s fire will be on fireSurrey woman CM
Later in the 2013 assembly elections, the picture changed and Congress, which had won three consecutive elections, was reduced to just 8 seats. After this, AAP continued to strengthen in Delhi and the party kept both the big parties BJP and Congress away from power. AAP won 28 seats in 2013, 67 in 2015 and 62 seats in the 2020 assembly elections. After AAP came to power, Arvind Kejriwal held the post of Chief Minister continuously but now Atishi will be the third woman Chief Minister of Delhi after Sushma Swaraj and Sheila Dixit.
