Dhaka, 26 June (IANS). Former Chief Election Commissioner of Bangladesh, Qazi Habibul Aval was sent on a three -day remand by a Dhaka court on Thursday in connection with alleged inaction and biased conduct during the national elections in 2024.
The order was issued by Dhaka’s Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Mustafa Zaman when police officers of Sher-e-Banglanagar police station demanded a 10-day remand for a 10-day remand.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) detective branch on Wednesday took Aval into custody after the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) registered a case on alleged irregularities and biased conduct during the last three national elections.
Confirming this, DMP Deputy Commissioner and Spokesperson Talebur Rahman said Aval was arrested from Moghbazar in Dhaka after BNP registered a case at Sher-e-Banglanagar police station.
The BNP has accused 24 people including former Chief Election Commissioners, Election Commissioners and other officials of irregularities and biased conduct during the 2014, 2018 and 2024 national elections in the country.
Earlier this week, a Dhaka court had ordered former Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda to be sent on four days remand on alleged rigging in the national election.
Reports also show that former Chief Election Commissioner Huda faced mob violence on Sunday, after which the police took him into custody after the BNP registered a case against him and several others.
Local media reported that some people forcibly entered Huda’s house in Dhaka and dragged them out and publicly humiliated them by putting garlands of shoes around their neck. He was later taken into police custody.
Two human rights organizations in Bangladesh strongly condemned and opposed humiliating and violent behavior with Huda.
In addition, 30 eminent citizens issued a joint statement condemning the recent mob violence against Huda and urged the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus to initiate legal proceedings against those involved in it.
