Kolkata, Sep 4 (IANS) The West Bengal government on Wednesday gave a job to the wife of Sabir Malik, a migrant worker from the state who was beaten to death in Haryana on August 27 on suspicion of eating beef.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee handed over the appointment letter to Malik’s wife Shakeela Sardar, who came to the state secretariat Nabanna with her four-year-old daughter.
Ever since the news of the lynching broke out, the Trinamool Congress has been vocal on the issue and claiming that Malik was murdered by people associated with cow protection groups.
On behalf of Trinamool, the party’s Lok Sabha MP Samirul Islam contacted the members of the victim’s family and informed them about the state government’s decision to stand with them.
According to sources, Shakeela Sardar has been given a contractual appointment in the Land and Land Reforms Department for one year. After one year, she will be inducted as Group-D staff.
The job offer is in addition to the compensation of Rs 3 lakh already given to the victim’s family.
Five alleged cow vigilantes were arrested for the murder of Malik in Haryana’s Charkhi Dadri district while two minors were detained.
According to reports, the accused suspected that Malik had consumed beef, so they hatched a conspiracy to kill him, police said.
The suspects allegedly called Malik and another labourer to a shop on the pretext of selling empty plastic bottles on August 27 and thrashed them. Malik died in the incident while the other labourer is undergoing treatment at a hospital.
The five arrested persons have been identified as Abhishek, Mohit, Ravinder, Kamaljeet and Sahil.
Malik worked as a garbage picker in a village in Charkhi Dadri district in Haryana, where most of the residents are migrant labourers.
