In the Rajya Sabha, a member of the Trinamool Congress accused the ruling BJP that instead of targeting West Bengal over Bangladeshi infiltrators, he should focus on Assam where it is a burning issue. He suggested a bill related to the immigration brought by the government to the Standing Committee of Parliament.
Sushmita Dev of Trinamool Congress, while participating in the Bill on Immigration and Foreigners in the Upper House, claimed that the bill disperses the four laws related to illegal immigration, citizenship, exile, detained camps, voters and Aadhaar cards. He said that if this bill is not sent to the Standing Committee of Parliament, it would not be appropriate for parliamentary democracy.
He said that people of the ruling party always talk about West Bengal, whereas if there is any state in the country where the issues of illegal immigration, citizenship, foreigners and intruders are vivid, then it is Assam. He said that there is a ‘double engine government’ in Assam.
The Trinamool member alleged that Assam is a laboratory of his (BJP’s) disrupt policy. He said that the BJP has destroyed the Assam agreement. He said that after the implementation of the amended citizenship law, only 350 people have been given citizenship of India.
He said that despite all the claims of the government, nothing has happened in the case of the National Citizenship Register (NRC) till date. He claimed that the ruling party had stopped Aadhaar cards of 26 lakh people.
