Assam Congress nominated president Gaurav Gogoi on Sunday criticized the BJP -led state government, saying that the ruling front is only concerned with “power, money, land and syndicate”.
He alleged that disastrous floods and waterlogging in the state capital Guwahati have disturbed life, mainly due to encroachment on wetlands by ministers and people close to the ruling party.
Gogoi started the procession from Sivasagar to Nagaon in the morning. The convoy with thousands of supporters during a 250 km long journey will pass through Jorhat and Golaghat before entering the Central Assam district in the evening.
He told reporters after visiting the historic Shiva Daul (temple) in Sivasagar city, “This government is sitting deep in power, wealth, land grab and syndicate. Unplanned construction, land grab and contractor special flyover has taken priority on the needs of the common people of Guwahati.”
People faced a terrible situation after heavy rains on Friday in the capital of Assam. Due to heavy rains, almost all roads and many residential areas were submerged. Due to continuous rains for two days, all areas have been flooded to knees, while in some places it has reached the chest.
Gogoi said, “The BJP’s policy in Guwahati is based on the greed for wealth and land. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma was a long -time Guwahati Development Minister. Now his close associate minister is. But BJP ministers are more concerned about the road to their home than the conservation of water bodies and construction of drainage system.”
In the Lok Sabha, the Congress Deputy Leader mentioned the house located near the Bondan channel of Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Jayant Malla Barua, on which one part has allegedly encroached to build a concrete road to their residential premises.
The Lok Sabha MP said, “We will highlight all corruption one by one across the state. In the coming days, heavy corruption prevailing in various departments of Guwahati development will also be revealed.”
He also said that during the recent panchayat elections in Assam, the performance of all opposition parties was less than expected.
He said, “All opposition parties should review their personal performance and the Congress is also doing so. The Congress is the most powerful among the opposition parties. To strengthen the opposition front, we have to strengthen the Congress.”
Earlier in the day, Gogoi met senior citizens in Sivasagar and discussed various issues. He then paid homage to the statue of Poly Fukan, the martyr of the freedom struggle and prayed at Shiva Daul.
He then led a huge gathering from Dol to Rang Ghar Chariyali. He then started the inter-district procession and proceeded through several districts of the upper and central part of the state.
The Congress spokesperson said, “From Saturday to Monday, Gogoi will visit 18 assembly constituencies of Jorhat, Sivasagar, Charydev, Golaghat and Nagaon districts. He will reach Nagaon around midnight today and stay there night.”
The MP of Jorhat was warmly welcomed by the Leader of the Opposition Devvrat Saikia, senior party leaders and a large number of Congress supporters in the Assam Assembly at Jorhat Airport on Saturday.
On Monday, newly appointed Assam Congress chief will meet party workers in Nagaon and then leave for Guwahati where he will go to the party headquarters. He will meet party workers on Tuesday and will officially take over as the chairman of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee.
Gogoi has replaced Bhupen Kumar Bora and will lead the party in the state elections at a time when Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is attacking him over alleged relations with his British wife’s Pakistani spy agency ISI.
