New Delhi, September 27 (IANS). Ahead of the elections for the 18th member of the Standing Committee in Delhi Municipal Corporation (MCD), Aam Aadmi Party leader Manish Sisodia has described the Bharatiya Janata Party as a party involved in corruption.
He said these things while addressing a press conference before the elections.
Sisodia talked about rights. He said, “BJP is completely destroying democracy. BJP is doing new acts every day to murder democracy, constitution and soul of India. On Thursday, the Mayor of Delhi tried to hold elections but BJP people did not allow it to happen. On this, our Mayor used her constitutional powers and fixed the next date of elections. This falls within the mayor’s constitutional rights.”
The former Deputy CM of Delhi further said, the Lieutenant Governor ordered the Commissioner to complete these elections by 10 pm. He said that elections should be held under any circumstances. If the Mayor is absent, elections should be conducted from the Deputy Mayor. If the Deputy Mayor is not found then any councilor should be arrested and elections should be conducted. BJP people remained sitting there the whole night. All the remaining AAP and Congress counselors went to their respective homes, but the BJP counselors remained sitting there the whole night.
Sisodia called this process dangerous for the country. Said, after this God gave him wisdom. He postponed the elections. Elections were not held at 10 pm. He is now conducting the elections till 1 pm. This is some conspiracy of BJP. What is being wasted in so much time? There is something due to which there is so much panic among these people that there was a hurry to hold elections at 10 o’clock in the night. Now, what would be a bigger murder of democracy than this, he is saying that leave aside the Mayor, Deputy Mayor, Senior Councilor and conduct elections with the Additional Commissioner of MCD. This is very dangerous for the country. How can all this happen? Delhi Municipal Corporation is a body of elected people.
It may be noted that the Municipal Corporation MCD Standing Committee elections have been postponed for the last one and a half years due to one reason or the other. Elections were to be held on September 26, but Mayor Shaili Oberoi had postponed it till October 5. However, Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena had ordered the MCD Commissioner to conduct the elections before 10 pm last night (Thursday) at any cost.
Let us tell you that the MCD Standing Committee is the most powerful body of the corporation. All important projects of MCD are proposed by the Standing Committee. Therefore, all parties want the Standing Committee elections to be in their favor. There are a total of 18 members in the MCD Standing Committee, out of which 17 members have been elected. Of these, 9 are from BJP and 8 from Aam Aadmi Party.
The election of the last member of the MCD Standing Committee was to be held on September 26. But, just before the elections, BJP took three councilors of Aam Aadmi Party to its side and nine MCD councilors of Congress decided not to participate in the elections. After this, the Aam Aadmi Party appeared weak in terms of numbers. After this the Mayor postponed the elections till October 5. Meanwhile, following the order of the Lieutenant Governor, it was decided to hold elections on Friday (September 27).
Let us tell you that MCD councilors will elect the last member of the Standing Committee. One councilor out of 250 has resigned, taking the number of MCD members to 249. Congress councilors have distanced themselves from this election. Therefore, now only 240 councilors will cast their votes. That means 121 votes will be decisive to win the election of the 18th member.
