Colombo, 9 February (IANS). Sri Lankan officials are trying to restore power after the nationwide power cuts on Sunday. The announcement was made by the government -owned power producers and suppliers, Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB).
According to the CEB, there was power cuts due to emergency at Panadura Grid Sub Station in the western province of the country.
According to the news agency Xinhua, the power cut started at 11:30 am local time and continued for more than three hours. Officers are working to fully restore power supply.
CEB President Tilak Siambalpatiya assured the public that quick action is being taken to restore electricity.
Meanwhile, Professor Udayanga Hempal, Secretary, Ministry of Energy, confirmed that the power failed due to imbalance in the national grid.
Local media, citing Energy Minister Kumara Jaikodi, said that the reason for the power failure was a group of monkeys that entered and damaged the sub station.
The minister said that these animals came in contact with our grid transformer which created an imbalance in the system “.
Meanwhile, the National Water Supply and Drainage Board appealed to the public to save water until the electricity was completely restored.
Although electricity has been restored in some areas, it is not immediately clear how long this cut will continue.
The islands with a population of 22 million are using hospitals and business generators or inverters in the nation.
In recent years, there has been power cuts across the country many times due to problems in the sub -station in Sri Lanka.
