New Delhi, March 28 (IANS). The cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved a subsidy proposal of Rs 37,216.15 crore to provide fertilizer to farmers across the country during the Kharif season on Friday.
The budgetary requirement for Kharif season 2025 (from 1 April to 30 September) will be around Rs 37,216.15 crore. This is about Rs 13,000 crore more than the budgetary requirement for the Rabi season 2024-25.
The official statement of the cabinet stated that subsidy on phosphoric and potassic (P&K) fertilizers including NPKS grade would be provided on the basis of approved rates for Kharif 2025, so that farmers can ensure smooth availability of these fertilizers at cheaper prices.
In addition, the government has extended the freight subsidy on single super phosphate (SSP) to Kharif 2025.
At the same time, the government said that subsidy on P&K fertilizers helps to ensure that farmers get nutrients of their needs at reasonable prices. Healthy soils lead to healthy crops and ensure food security for the nation.
The government is providing 28 grades of P&K fertilizers on subsidized prices to farmers through fertilizer manufacturers/importers. Subsidy on P&K fertilizers is given under the NBS scheme since 2010.
Given the interests of farmers, the government is committed to ensure the availability of P&K fertilizers at cheaper prices.
Given the recent trends of fertilizers and international prices of inputs like urea, DAP, MOP and Sulfur, the government has decided to approve NBS rates for effective Kharif 2025 from 01.04.25 to 30.09.25 on phosphoric and potassic (P&K) fertilizers including NPKS grade.
Fertilizer companies will be provided subsidies as per the approved and notified rates so that fertilizers can be made available to farmers at cheaper prices.
