Ottawa, Sep 11 (IANS) Canada has suspended around 30 existing permits for arms sales to Israel, local media reported, quoting Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly.
According to the report, Foreign Minister Melanie Joly said on Tuesday that Ottawa’s policy is that Canadian-made weapons and their components cannot be used in the Gaza Strip, regardless of how the weapons are shipped to Israel.
In January, Ottawa stopped approving new weapons permits for Israelis, although permits approved in previous months were still active, news agency Xinhua reported, citing local media.
“We will not send any weapons or parts to Gaza. How and where they are being sent is irrelevant,” the foreign minister was quoted as saying.
According to reports, Canada is also blocking a contract with the US government to send ammunition manufactured in Quebec to the Israeli Defence Forces, which Washington announced a few weeks ago.
