Ottawa, Sep 19 (IANS) The Canadian federal government has announced further cuts in the number of international students to control the arrival of temporary residents.
Immigration, Refugees, Citizenship Canada (IRCC) said on Wednesday that new international student study permits in 2025 will be reduced by 10 per cent from the 2024 target of 485,000, according to news agency Xinhua.
This means that study permits issued will be reduced to 437,000.
The number of study permits to be issued in 2026 will remain the same as in 2025, the statement said.
Let us tell you that in January, the federal government said that about 360,000 graduate study permits would be approved in 2024. This number is 35 percent less than the approximately 560,000 permits to be issued in 2023.
Canada’s population exceeded 41 million in the first quarter of 2024. The number of temporary residents has increased rapidly.
Earlier this year, IRCC announced a reduction in the number of temporary residents.
The government intends to reduce this population from 6.5 per cent of Canada’s total population to 5 per cent by 2026.
