India alliance on Tuesday held former Supreme Court Judge Justice B.K. Sudarshan Reddy was elected his candidate for the Vice Presidential election to be held on 9 September. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge made this announcement after the India alliance meeting in the national capital.
Please tell that B Sudarshan Reddy will file his nomination for the Vice Presidential election on August 21.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge said, “He will enroll on August 21. Tomorrow, MPs of all opposition parties are meeting at the Central Hall at one o’clock.”
TMC MP Derek O Bryan said, “All opposition parties including Aam Aadmi Party agree on it.”
Kharge described the battle for the post of Vice President as an ideological battle and thanked the united opposition in support of Justice Reddy’s candidature.
Kharge told reporters, “This election of the post of Vice President is an ideological battle and all opposition parties agree on it and that is why we have nominated B Sudarshan Reddy as a joint candidate.”
Congress President Kharge appreciated Justice Reddy and described him as one of the “most prestigious and progressive jurists” in the country. He considered Justice Reddy as a constant and courageous supporter of social, economic and political justice.
He said, “B. Sudarshan Reddy is one of the most prestigious and progressive jurists in India. He has a long and outstanding legal career, including judges of the Andhra Pradesh High Court, Chief Justice of Guwahati High Court and Judge of Supreme Court.”
He said, “He has been a constant and courageous supporter of social, economic and political justice. He is a poor person and if you read many of his decisions, you will know how they took favor of poor people and protected the constitution and fundamental rights.”
Significantly, Justice B Sudarshan Reddy was born on 8 July 1946 and was registered as an advocate at the Andhra Pradesh Bar Council in Hyderabad on 27 December 1971.
Justice Reddy has practiced in the Andhra Pradesh High Court in writ and civil matters and has worked as a government lawyer in the High Court during 1988-90.
He also worked as a permanent lawyer in addition to the central government for 6 months in 1990. He also worked as a legal advisor and permanent lawyer at the University of Osmania. On May 2, 1995, he was appointed a permanent judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court.
Justice Reddy was appointed Chief Justice of the Guwahati High Court on 5 December 2005. After this, on 12 January 2008, he was appointed a judge of the Supreme Court of India. Justice Reddy retired on 8 July 2011. B Sudarshan Reddy will contest elections against National Democratic Alliance candidate CP Radhakrishnan.
The Election Commission had earlier announced that voting for the Vice Presidential election will be held on 9 September and counting will also take place on the same day. The last date for filing nomination is 21 August, while candidates can withdraw their nomination by 25 August.
Let us know that on July 21, the post of Vice President became vacant after Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned citing health reasons on the first day of the monsoon session of Parliament. The Vice President is elected by an electorate, which consists of MPs from both houses of Parliament.
The Vice President’s elections are ruled by the provisions of Articles 64 and 68 of the Constitution. The Election Commission notification the Vice President elections by the President and Vice President Elections Act, 1952.
According to Article 66 (1) of the Indian Constitution, the Vice President will be elected through a single transitional vote by the proportional representation system and voting in such elections will be done by secret voting.
