Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi posted on his social media handle X, claiming that democracy and the Constitution have been murdered again in BJP-ruled Assam and Uttar Pradesh. The Congress party is carrying out Satyagraha across the country in support of Babasaheb and the Constitution. During this period, the death of our Congress workers like Mridul Islam in Guwahati and Prabhat Pandey in Lucknow due to excessive police force is very sad and condemnable. Express my deepest condolences to his bereaved loved ones. These families have the right to complete justice. Babbar Sher of Congress will continue the struggle for truth and the Constitution.
According to media reports, Congress workers were protesting in Guwahati over several issues including Manipur violence and bribery allegations against Gautam Adani. During this, there was a scuffle between the police and Congress workers, in which Assam Congress chief Bhupen Kumar Bora and former Rajya Sabha MP Ripun Bora fell on the ground and were taken into custody. Later he was released.
Meanwhile, party spokesperson Bedabrata Bora claimed that Congress Legal Cell member Advocate Mridul Islam (45) felt suffocated when a tear gas cell fell near him. He said he was immediately taken to a nearby private hospital and then to Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). There he was declared dead.
At the same time, the police has clearly denied the incident of anyone getting injured during the clash and said that the exact cause of death will be known after the post mortem report comes. Meanwhile, in another incident, UP Congress chief Ajay Rai claimed that a party worker named Prabhat Pandey died during a protest near the state assembly due to “police brutality”.
DCP (Central Lucknow) Raveena Tyagi said that Prabhat Pandey was brought to Hazratganj Civil Hospital in an unconscious state from the Congress office. Doctors declared him dead. According to doctors, prima facie no injury marks were found on his body. However, the postmortem will be conducted by a panel and the process will be videographed. Further legal action will be taken accordingly.
