Cyprus is not being pressurized to share information in Adani case: Congress claims

The Congress on Monday claimed that a prominent accused in the case associated with Adani Group has Cyprus citizenship and to share information from the Government of India, this level of pressure is not being put on the country which is needed.

Party General Secretary Jairam Ramesh said that the investigation of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) is being interrupted by not sharing information from Cyprus. He raised this subject when Prime Minister Narendra Modi was on a tour of Cyprus on Sunday. Adani Group has dismissed all the allegations against him in the past.

Ramesh posted on ‘X’, ‘Prime Minister has reached Cyprus while going to Canada. Of course, he would like to assure us that it is just a coincidence that a prominent person associated with the ‘Modani Scam’ has Cyprus citizenship. Cyprus fund ‘New Liana’ allegedly has an investment of about $ 42 million in Adani companies. The ‘ultimat benefits of this fund’ (real beneficiaries) is associated with an institution called Amacorp.

He said, ‘This amicorp has been involved in the establishment of at least seven Adani promoter units. Apart from this, its name has also been linked to 17 offshore shell companies associated with Vinod Adani. Amacorp’s name is also associated with three offshore investors in Mauritius who have invested in Shares of Adani Group. ,

The Congress General Secretary claimed that all these transactions are currently under the scrutiny of SEBI, but this investigation is being interrupted because ‘Tax Haaven’ countries like Cyprus are not sharing information about financial transactions and the pressure of that level is not being put from the Government of India, which is needed.

Ramesh mentioned that Cyprus gained independence from British rule on August 16, 1960 and in the 1950s, India led the international campaign for its independence.

He said, ‘Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, in fact, ensured the participation of Cyprus leader and freedom fighter Archbishop Makaros III at the historic Afro-Asian Bandung conference held in Indonesia at the end of April 1955. Makaros was the only European to attend that summit. Two years later, VK Krishna Menon created a stir in the United Nations in New York by presenting a proposal on Cyprus and with his emotional speech. The news of this proposal was prominently published on the front page of the New York Times. ,

He said that when Nehru died, Public Holiday and Mourning Day were announced on 27 May 1964 in Cyprus.

Ramesh said, “In the early 1980s, a busy and beautiful road in our capital’s golf link area was named after Archbishop … I suspect that the advisors of Prime Minister Narendra Modi are also aware of all these things.”

The Congress leader said, “It is necessary to remember in the context of today’s geopolitical situation that our bilateral relations with Turkey were sour in the 1950s after India’s support for freedom of Cyprus.”
