Amaravati, Sep 22 (IANS) Dalit groups have demanded action against Jana Sena MLA Pantham Venkateswara Rao for allegedly assaulting and abusing a senior doctor of the Rangaraya Medical College (RMC) in Kakinada.
Dalit groups said the MLA from Kakinada Rural constituency along with his supporters barged into the RMC playground and assaulted and abused P. Uma Maheshwara Rao for not allowing outsiders to play in the ground.
Let us tell you that Jana Sena is a partner in the Telugu Desam Party (TDP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government in Andhra Pradesh. The MLA is also known as Nanaji. He threatened to kill the doctor and pulled off his mask and raised his hand to hit him. The MLA’s supporters also beat up the doctor.
The incident took place on Saturday night after some local youths complained to the MLA that they were being prevented from playing volleyball at the RMC ground.
Uma Maheshwara Rao, head of the forensic department of RMC and secretary of the sports board, and other doctors had banned outsiders from entering the playground after students complained that they were not getting a chance to play. Girl students had also stopped using the ground due to the “misbehaviour” of outsiders.
On Saturday evening, when outsiders were not allowed to enter the playground, they argued and created a ruckus with RMC vice-principal Vishnu Vardhan, other doctors and students. Some locals complained to the MLA and alleged that the RMC doctors were misbehaving with them.
Nanaji along with his supporters reached the playground and misbehaved and assaulted Uma Maheshwara Rao. The RMC principal complained to Kakinada Superintendent of Police Vikrant Patil. The SP visited the college along with Collector S. Shan Mohan. The MLA later apologised for the incident.
However, Dalit groups are not satisfied with the apology. They have demanded the government to take action against the MLA. Government doctors have also written a letter to Deputy Chief Minister and Jana Sena Party President Pawan Kalyan, urging him to take action against Nanaji.
State Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav condemned the attack on senior doctors and students of the government medical college. He said that the government will not tolerate such incidents and action will be taken against the culprits after investigation.
