Delhi government will oppose the imposition of GST on research grants

New Delhi, September 8 (IANS) On Sunday, the Delhi government alleged that the grants given in the field of research related education have been reduced. Delhi government’s education minister Atishi said that in the year 2014, there was a provision of 70 thousand crores rupees for research, now it has been reduced to only 35 thousand crores rupees. Atishi said that not only has the budget allocation for research been reduced, but GST is also being imposed on the private grants that research institutions are bringing. She said that the Delhi government will raise this issue in the GST Council meeting and will oppose it.

A meeting of the GST Council is scheduled on Monday. Atishi said that the Delhi government will demand in the GST Council that the GST imposed on research grants should be removed immediately. Along with this, she said that GST should be removed on grants given to educational institutions.

Atishi says that apart from this, the issue of levying GST on small amount transactions done on online payment gateways is also coming up in the GST Council. Atishi says that levying GST on transactions less than Rs 2000 will be opposed.

He said that the Indian government has been constantly saying that they are promoting digital transactions and encouraging a cashless economy. But imposing GST on small online transactions will have an adverse effect.

He said that the central government is bringing a proposal in the GST Council meeting on Monday under which GST is proposed to be imposed on small transactions. Till now, online transactions of less than Rs 2000 were exempted from GST. That is, if we buy anything through net banking or online and the total transaction is less than Rs 2000, then GST is not imposed on that transaction. Atishi said that the central government is bringing a proposal that 18 percent GST should be imposed on all transactions that take place through payment gateways, even if it is less than Rs 2000. Atishi says that the Delhi government will oppose this move of the Center.
