Oslo, March 6 (IANS). Denmark has dismissed the new attempts by US President Donald Trump to include Greenland in the US.
Trump on Wednesday announced that his administration would “strongly support” the people of Greenland to determine their future. He said, “And if you want, we welcome you to the United States.”
Denmark’s Prime Minister Mete Frederickson clarified the Denmark position over Trump’s statement and said that Greenland’s future would only be decided by the people there. He said, “Greenland belongs to the people of Greenland. This is a stance that we strongly support the Danish government.”
Greenland Prime Minister Mute Agade also completely rejected Trump’s claim. He wrote on social media that the people of Greenland do not wish to be a part of America. Denmark Defense Minister Trols Lund Paulson also reiterated this and said, “Greenland will never be a part of America.”
Greenland, which is the largest island in the world, was a colony of Denmark until 1953. It then became an integral part of Denmark and the people of Greenland got Danish citizenship. Greenland gained self -government in 1979, but Denmark maintained his foreign and defense policy.
This is not the first time Trump has talked about making Greenland a part of America. Even before this, Denmark rejected the idea and said that Greenland is not for sale.
Greenland’s Prime Minister Agade again said again on Wednesday that the people of Greenland will decide their own future and they neither want to become Danish nor American. Posting on Facebook, he said, “We neither want to become American, nor Danish, we are Kalalit (Greenlanders). Americans and their leaders should understand this.”
