New York, Sep 17 (IANS) Former US President Donald Trump has said that if he comes back to power, “relations with China will be good”, and that he does not think Russia and some other countries like it are enemies, as current President Biden’s administration believes.
“I think we’ll have a very good relationship with China,” Trump, the Republican presidential nominee, said during an online interview on X on Monday.
However, it is also true that he recently threatened to impose tariffs of 60 percent or more on imports from China during his current campaign.
When Trump was president, he accused China of “mishandling” the spread of Covid-19 and said it had “looted our factories, taken our jobs, destroyed our industries, stole our intellectual property”.
Seeking the role of a peacemaker in the current global environment, Trump said, “I think we would have a very good relationship with Russia. I want Russia to make a deal with Ukraine and save millions of lives.”
He reiterated his longstanding claim that he wanted to end the Ukraine war “even before he took office” and wanted to do so “as president-elect.”
Trump’s interview took place during the launch of World Liberty Financial, a cryptocurrency venture that is owned by his family.
His son Barron, 18, who started college this semester and has so far stayed out of the spotlight, is involved in the business and Trump praised his knowledge of cryptocurrencies.
Trump said he would make the US the “cryptocurrency capital of the world” and that China would dominate the sector if the US did not take the initiative.
Trump’s promotion of this during the campaign is another example of mixing politics and business, and could lead to conflict if he is elected.
Biden’s fiercest critics appeared cordial to him during interviews Monday.
“He’s a nice guy who called to make sure I was OK,” Trump said.
He said the president was the victim of a coup plotted by former Speaker Nancy Pelosi and others.
“I thought he was treated very unfairly. He went to the primary, he won, and then he was kicked out,” he said.
Trump said his Democratic Party rival Vice President Kamala Harris “didn’t get any votes”.
Repeating his old strategy of fear-mongering about the Left, Trump said, “She (Kamala Harris) will not be right for the country. We have to save our country, we cannot play games. So we cannot have a Marxist communist as president.”
