AAP leader and Leader of Opposition in Delhi Assembly Atishi has written a letter to Chairman Vijendra Gupta expressing concern over rejecting special mention of opposition members on law and order issues.
Atishi claimed, “The double engine government has failed, so she does not want discussion.”
Atishi criticized the decision and questioned why the increasing crime including rape and firing cases in Delhi is not being discussed in the assembly.
Atishi said that the Assembly Secretariat has told him that special mention requests of five AAP MLAs related to law and order have been rejected, saying that the Delhi Legislative Assembly does not have the right to consider such issues.
In his letter, Atishi strongly criticized the decision, saying, “If there is rape in Delhi or bullets are fired on the streets, should there not be discussed in the assembly?”
He argued that it is the responsibility of the MLAs to represent the people of their constituency and raise concerns about the safety of citizens. Atishi claimed that this is the first time in the history of the Delhi Assembly that such important issues have been rejected.
Atishi also pointed to the contradiction in the attitude of the ruling party and reminded how before the elections the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) promised that “double engine government” would solve the problems of Delhi.
Atishi said that after the election, it seems that the BJP is stopping the discussion on the same issues, which it had promised to discuss.
Atishi urged Chairman Vijendra Gupta to ensure that every issue affecting the residents of Delhi should be discussed in the Assembly, refusing to allow such debate as an insult to democracy.
He emphasized that stopping the discussion on increasing crime will not solve the problems of the people of Delhi.
Earlier on Wednesday, Leader of Opposition (LOP) Atishi in the Delhi Assembly on Wednesday questioned the Bharatiya Janata Party about not discussing the budget and said that he had written a letter to Speaker Vijendra Gupta seeking at least two days to discuss the budget.
On Monday, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, while presenting the budget, described it as a “historic” step towards converting Delhi into investment and innovation-friendly city.
He also questioned why not all 14 reports of the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) are being presented and urged the chairman to present the remaining 11 reports.
On March 24, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta presented a CAG report on the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) and exposed the operational disabilities and financial deficit, which led to the criticism of the previous Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government.
