Meghalaya Governor Satya Pal Malik, who is in the headlines for criticizing the central government, has once surrounded the government over the farmers’ agitation. During a program in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, he said that if the demands of the farmers are not met, they will resort to violence. At the same time, he said that he was not afraid of being snatched away from the post of governor.
Malik said, “My advice to Delhi is not to fight with the farmers, they are dangerous people. Whatever the farmer wants, he will get it. If you don’t get it from the conversation, you will fight it. If need be, they will turn violent.” The former governor of Bihar, Goa and Jammu and Kashmir (before it became a union territory) also said that he may lose his post to raise farmers’ issues, but is not afraid to raise his voice or be stripped of the governor’s post. .
Malik also advised the central government to fulfill all the promises made to the farmers, who had ended their year-long agitation against agriculture laws in December last year on assurances from the government in this regard. He said, “Farmers cannot be suppressed. They know how to get their demands fulfilled. If the assurance given to them is not fulfilled, they will resume their protest.”
The Meghalaya Governor clarified that he has no “enmity” with the Centre. “I live in a one-and-a-half-room house in Delhi, so I am able to take on PM Modi on the issue of farmers,” he said. Reiterating his earlier remarks, Malik said that when he met the PM on the issue of farmers, they had a fight in just five minutes. Referring to the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, he said, “I told her that Sikhs and Jats don’t forget anything. You should send them with something.”
Satyapal Malik was in Jodhpur to participate in a book release program of the Marwar Jat Mahasabha. He has already commented against the PM and the Center on the issue of farmers. Earlier this month, at an event in Haryana, he claimed that his friends had advised him not to criticize the BJP government as he could be made the President or Vice-President if he remained silent. He then insisted that he “doesn’t care about these positions”.
