First step towards Township rehabilitation for Wayanad landslide victims: Priyanka Gandhi

Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said that the proposed township for Wayanad landslide victims is the first step towards their rehabilitation and everyone should be positive towards it.

In a conversation with reporters after visiting the Shri Sita Devi Lavkush temple in Pulpalli, Wadra said, “Look, this is the first step and we have come here for the inauguration and we should be positive towards it.”

He said, ‘Everyone has made every effort on their behalf. As you know, the Karnataka government has announced that it will help and build 100 houses. Therefore, I think this is a collective effort and everyone should be positive. ‘

Congress leaders have reached Wayanad on a three -day visit. During this time she will participate in several programs, including the foundation of the proposed township for the survivors in the Mundakai-Churalmala landslide in the evening, the Elestone Estate, Kalpta.

The state government’s township project aims to provide permanent and equipped housing to families who lost their homes in a devastating landslide in the Mundakai and Churalamala areas of Wayanad on 30 July, 2024. More than 200 people were killed and many others were injured in this disaster. Both areas were almost destroyed in landslides.

Vadra in Pulpalli appreciated Gram Panchayat officials for achievements in public health care and MNREGA (Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act).

After inaugurating the new Gram Panchayat office complex in Pulpalli Gram Panchayat of Sultan Bathri, he said that it is very proud to see that democracy is working effectively and beautifully at the ground level.

Referring to the human-pester struggle in the region, the Congress leader said, “We all know that seven people were killed in wild animal attacks in Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency from the end of December 2024 to the middle of February this year.”

Vadra said that he has taken up the matter in Parliament and demanded the Central Government to take decisive steps to prevent difficulties before Wayanad due to human struggle. He said, “Although the solution to this problem is difficult, but I hope that we all together will be able to solve this problem and your life will be easy.”

Vadra also said that the delay in getting funds in the MNREGA scheme and the outstanding wages are another major issue raised in Parliament by Kerala MPs. He said, “We will put pressure as much as possible so that the funds can be released.”

Earlier, Priyanka reached Wayanad by road from Kannur Airport.
