Abhijeet Mukherjee, son of former President Pranab Mukherjee, again joined the Congress on Wednesday after staying in the Trinamool Congress for four years. Former Lok Sabha member Abhijeet Mukherjee was given the membership of the party in the presence of Ghulam Ahmed Mir, General Secretary in -charge of party affairs of West Bengal and MLA from Jammu and Kashmir at the state headquarters of Congress here.
After the Congress’s national and state leadership handed over the party’s flag, Mukherjee told reporters, “This is my second birthday in Congress and politics.”
Abhijeet Mukherjee said that he had expressed his desire to join the Congress again in June last year, but it has now been done due to elections in various states.
Four years after joining the Trinamool Congress in July 2021, he has returned to Congress.
State Congress President Shubhankar Sarkar said that this is a major step of the party’s state unit to fight for the people of West Bengal.
Abhijeet Mukherjee won the Jangipur Lok Sabha by -election on a Congress ticket in 2012, when his father Pranab Mukherjee was elected President. Pranab Mukherjee had earlier held the responsibility of several major ministries in the central government as a Congress minister.
Abhijeet Mukherjee also won the 2014 Lok Sabha elections from the same constituency as a Congress candidate.
