Accra, 8 December (IANS). Voting for the general elections held in the African country Ghana has ended. At present, counting of votes is going on in the country. In this election, more than 1.8 crore voters across the country voted to elect the new President and 276 MPs.
According to news agency Singula, voting started at 7 am local time on Saturday and ended at 5 pm.
Electoral Commission Chairperson Jean Mensa appealed to the commission in charge of polling stations to discharge their duties lawfully and give the country undisputed results.
The Election Commission said that 13 candidates were in the fray for the presidential election, but after the death of one, 12 candidates remained in the fray. Whereas 801 candidates are contesting in the parliamentary elections.
The winner of the presidential election must receive at least one vote, 50 percent. But if no candidate receives more than 50 percent of the votes in the first round of voting, the two candidates receiving the most votes will compete in a second round (run off).
This is the 9th election to be held in the country since the African country returned to constitutional democratic rule in 1992.
Earlier on 2 December, special voting took place at selected polling stations in Ghana.
