His story is to leave an ordinary peasant family and reach an important place of national politics. He is a member of the Lok Sabha and a member of the Rashtriya Lok Dal from Baghpat since 2024.
Rajkumar Sangwan Family and Education
Sangwan was born on 5 March 1960 in a Hindu Jat family in Uppalahra village, Meerut, Uttar Pradesh and Girirajo Devi. He obtained a degree of Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy from Chaudhary Charan Singh University in Meerut. His deep interest in education inspired him to do research, resulting in his PhD degree.

Dr. Sangwan’s political visit began in 1979, when he met former Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh in Meerut. This meeting changed the direction of his life, and he decided to play an active role in social service and politics. In 1980, he also went to jail, participating in the movement against the Maya Tyagi incident, which shows his struggle. Even after this, he has gone to jail many times while protesting for students and farmers.
He took forward his political journey by joining the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) as the District Vice President of Meerut in 1982. In 1986, he became the national vice president of the student Rashtriya Lok Dal and was appointed as Meerut District President of Youth RLD in 1990. Rajkumar Sangwan did not get married. He is currently the national secretary of RLD. Rajkumar Sangwan, 61, has retired from the post of Professor of History Department at Meerut College some time ago.

Dr. Rajkumar Sangwan has assimilated the principles and ideology of his political guru Chaudhary Charan Singh in his life. Chaudhary Charan Singh, who was the fifth Prime Minister of India, lived his entire life in Indianness and dignity of rural environment. His ideology was mainly focused on farmers’ rights, rural development, and indigenous economy.
Chaudhary Charan Singh believed that the path of prosperity of India passes through the fields and barns of the villages. He took important steps to eradicate 6 zamindari system and prepared a bill based on the welfare principles of the state. Their policies were towards raising the standard of living of farmers and poor.
Dr. Sangwan not only understood the ideology of Chaudhary Saheb, but also made it the basis of his political life. He always fought for the rights of farmers and remained dedicated to rural development. His political activities and issues raised in Parliament are proof that he is a strong supporter of Chaudhary Charan Singh’s principles. Dr. Sangwan says that his political journey is related to the service of the public and he is a follower of Chaudhary Charan Singh. He propagated Chaudhary Saheb’s flag in election rallies and played an active role in politics after being impressed by his ideology.
Role in Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD)
Dr. Sangwan carried forward his political journey with the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD). Due to his loyalty and dedication to the party, he got an opportunity to serve in various positions. In 1982, he became the District Vice President of Meerut, in 1986, the national vice -president of the student RLD, and in 1990, was appointed as Meerut District President of Youth RLD. Due to his leadership ability and organization skills, the party also made him in charge of Jharkhand and Bihar elections.

In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Dr. Rajkumar Sangwan contested from Baghpat seat and won. His victory proved how strong his popularity and credibility in the public is. 2024 was the winner of Lok Sabha Election (Baghpat seat)
After Rajkumar Sangwan (RLD) defeated his nearest rival – Samajwadi Party and BJP candidates, he said – “The people of Baghpat believe in me is my real power.” As MPs, he raised several important issues in the interest of farmers, laborers and rural communities in Parliament. His deep understanding of oratory arts and issues established him as an influential MP.

Dr. Sangwan has imbibed the principles and ideology of his political guru Chaudhary Charan Singh. They believe that the progress of the country is not possible without the upliftment of farmers and rural communities. While reflecting his honor and dedication to Chaudhary Charan Singh, he decided to remain unmarried for a lifetime, so that he could be completely dedicated to social service and politics.
Contribution towards social service and education
Along with politics, Dr. Sangwan has also made significant contribution in the field of education. As a professor of history at Meerut College, he educated students for many years and motivated them to social service. He believes that education is the most powerful medium of change in society. Dr. Rajkumar Sangwan’s life is an example of how a person coming from a simple background can bring significant changes in society through his dedication, struggle and service. Also, any goal can be achieved through true loyalty and hard work.
