Hurriyat Conference President Mirwaiz Umar Farooq said on Friday that he has been placed under house arrest and not allowed to offer mass prayers at Jamia Mosque here.
Kashmir chief Maulvi Mirwaiz on Friday gives arguments in the historic mosque located in the Nauhatta area of the city and was still scheduled to give him a debate.
But Mirwaiz said in a post on the social media platform ‘X’, “Once again, this juma was placed under house arrest and stopped from offering prayers at Jama Masjid. It is very sad and derogatory that the authorities are constantly crushing my basic religious rights as per their desire.
He also posted a copy of a proposal prepared by ‘Mutahida Majlis Ulema’ (MMU), a group of several religious organizations, against the Waqf Amendment Act.
The proposal states, “Mutahida Majlis-e-Ulema, Jammu and Kashmir, expresses her concern about many provisions of that new law, which is being seen by the Muslim community as the established and affecting the religious character of the Waqf institution in India.”
This proposal was to be read in mosques, dargahs and Imambaras of Jammu and Kashmir during Jumaz prayers.
The proposal states that the new law brings significant changes in the management and supervision of Waqf properties and many people believe that it can reduce the role and authority of the Muslim community in the supervision of its religious properties, which have been traditionally managed according to Islamic principles.
The MMU prepared this proposal after not getting permission for a meeting on this issue on Wednesday.
It said, “The provision allowing non-Muslims to the central and state Waqf boards, and the removal of the pre-removation of the CEO of the Waqf Board, has been seen by the community as deviation from the spiritual and religious ethos of Waqf management.”
