The Congress on Sunday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of taking “U Turn” about the caste census and said that he should clarify whether he has officially changed his policy on the subject.
Party General Secretary Jairam Ramesh also questioned whether a deadline has been fixed for caste census?
The central government recently decided that castes would also be counted in the next census.
Ramesh posted on ‘X’, “There is enough evidence about Narendra Modi’s sudden, complete and frustrated ‘U-turn’ on caste census.”
He said, “In a TV interview on 28 April last year, he had called all the people seeking caste census as” urban Naxal “. On July 20, 2021, the Modi government told Parliament that it has decided not to calculate the caste-wise population other than SC and ST in the census.”
According to Ramesh, in its affidavit given to the Supreme Court on 21 September 2021, the Modi government had clearly stated that a conscious policy decision has been taken by the Central Government not to take information about any other caste within the purview of the census (2021).
He claimed that in fact the Modi government clearly urged the Supreme Court not to order a caste census for the OBC.
The Congress leader questioned the Prime Minister, “Would he be honest to accept that his government has officially changed its policy on caste census in the last 11 years?”
Ramesh also asked, “Will he tell people and Parliament the reasons for change in government policy?” Will he set a deadline for caste census? ”
