Himanta sarma on assam demography change: A statement by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has caused a storm in politics. He has expressed serious concern about the changing population structure in Assam. According to Sarma, due to the increasing population of Muslims in Assam, the number of Hindus and Muslims will reach par by 2041. Currently, the Muslim population in Assam is 34 percent, which can increase to 50 percent by 2041 and can be Hindu minorities. He also said that this is not his personal opinion but the result of census data.
Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the population of Muslims in Assam is 34 percent. Out of which 3 percent are local Muslims and the remaining 31 percent are Mian Muslims who have come to Assam from Bangladesh. He has expressed his concern about this growing Muslim population. The Hindu population has steadily declined in the last few decades in Assam.
Decreasing Hindu population according to data
According to the 1991 census, the Hindu population in Assam was 67.14 percent. Which declined to 64.89 percent in 2001 and further reduced to 61.47 percent in 2011. It is clear from this decline that the Hindu population in Assam is continuously decreasing in the last 20 years. At the same time, from 1991 to 2011, there has been a continuous increase in Muslim population in Assam. The Muslim population was 28.43 percent in 1991, which increased to 30.92 percent in 2001 and 34.22 percent in 2011. Sarma estimates that by 2041 this number can reach 50 percent.
Fast -growing Muslim -dominated districts
In 2001, out of 23 districts of Assam, only 6 districts were Muslim -majority. But in 2011, this number increased to 9 districts. Of these, the number of Muslims in Dhubri district was more than 74 percent. Himanta Biswa Sarma says that the number of Muslims coming from Bangladesh is changing the population structure of Assam, and if this series continues, Hindu can become a minority by 2041.
Increasing Muslim population in the world
Maulana and political opponents have strongly protested on this issue. Recently, a report by the Pew Research Center said that the Muslim population is growing fastest in the world, and this effect is also visible in India. According to the Pew Research Center, the Hindu population in India was 80 percent in 2010, which declined to 79.4 percent in 2020, while the Muslim population increased from 14.3 percent to 15.2 percent.
