New Delhi, December 28 (IANS). Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday paid tribute to former Prime Minister and renowned economist Dr. Manmohan Singh by paying his last respects to him.
The former Prime Minister died on Thursday night at AIIMS, Delhi at the age of 92. He was admitted to the hospital after becoming unconscious at home. According to doctors, even after making every possible effort, he could not be saved. His last rites were performed at Nigam Bodh Ghat in Delhi on Saturday.
Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also reached Nigam Bodh Ghat for his last darshan. While sharing its pictures on X, he wrote in a post, “Paying last tribute to former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh ji. His service towards the country will always be remembered.”
The mortal remains of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, wrapped in the national flag, were cremated with full state honours. His daughter lit his funeral pyre.
On this occasion, President Draupadi Murmu, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Congress Parliamentary Party President Sonia Gandhi, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, other senior leaders of the Congress Party and government ministers were present.
Before the last rites, President Draupadi Murmu, Supreme Commander of the Tri-Services and Tri-Services, saluted former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. The mortal remains of the former Prime Minister were escorted to the Nigambodh Ghat by officers of the three armed forces accompanied by a military band. Officers of the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force saluted the former Prime Minister here.
The last rites of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh were performed as per Sikh customs. During this time his wife and daughters were present.
