New Delhi, October 23 (IANS). A day after chaotic scenes were witnessed during the meeting of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) reviewing the Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2024, committee chairperson Jagdambika Pal on Wednesday claimed that the “violence” committed by Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee “It was undemocratic and anarchist.
Kalyan Banerjee has been suspended for one day in the next session of Parliament due to his misbehavior.
“On the motion moved by MP Nishikant Dubey, the Lok Sabha Speaker has suspended the Trinamool MP for a day in the next session,” Jagdambika Pal told IANS.
The JPC meeting was briefly adjourned on Tuesday after Banerjee, in a fit of anger, broke a bottle and threw its pieces towards the JPC chairperson.
Jagadambika Pal condemned Banerjee’s action, calling it undemocratic and anarchist.
He said, “In a democratic system one should register one’s dissent through voting and should not resort to violence.”
The JPC president said that the actions of the Trinamool MP are not compatible with the democratic system.
He said, “I don’t know the motive behind his violence. He is getting the opportunity to participate in debates regularly in the JPC. I am not able to understand what kind of vote bank politics he is doing or Whose message are they trying to send by resorting to violence?”
He said it was unfortunate that the proceedings of the JPC, constituted at the initiative of the government for detailed discussion on the Bill with all stakeholders, have been politicized by some members.
Following Tuesday’s incident, a proposal was made to suspend Banerjee from attending JPC meetings for one day (equivalent to two sessions).
“Kalyan Banerjee, member of the Joint Parliamentary Committee on Waqf, has been booked under Rules 261 and 374(1)(2) of the Lok Sabha for his wrong choice of words against committee chairperson Jagdambika Pal and throwing bottle fragments at her,” the resolution said. is suspended for one day and two sessions.”
The suspension was approved by majority, although some ruling party MPs, including BJP’s Abhijit Gangopadhyay, were not satisfied with the punishment. He said that this punishment is less.
The uproar at the JPC meeting began when representatives of two Cuttack-based organisations, Justice in Reality and Panchasakha Bani Prachar Mandali, were presenting their views on the bill.
Banerjee interrupted him several times, leading to an altercation with BJP MP Gangopadhyay.
The situation worsened when Banerjee attempted to speak again outside, leading to an argument between the two JPC members.
During this debate, Banerjee allegedly broke a water bottle, injuring herself, and threw the broken pieces towards Pal.
The meeting was stopped, and later opposition and ruling party members accused each other of using abusive language.
