Vienna, Aug 30 (IANS) The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has said that he will visit the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) next week as the nuclear safety situation there remains dangerous.
IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi issued a statement on Thursday saying he would hold high-level talks and assess developments at the ZNPP during his visit, according to news agency Xinhua.
Grossi’s visit comes after recent extremely worrying incidents at the ZNPP, including a fire in the plant’s cooling tower as well as a drone attack near the plant earlier this month.
“A nuclear accident must be avoided at all costs and a nuclear power plant should never be attacked,” Grossi warned. “The consequences could be disastrous and nobody will benefit from it.”
According to Thursday’s statement, IAEA experts stationed at the ZNPP have occasionally heard explosions and other signs of military activity near the plant.
Grossi also expressed concern over the growing insecurity of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure and its potential impact on the security of countries operating nuclear power plants.
