Bahujan Samajwadi Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati lodged her protest on the recently passed Waqf Amendment Bill on Friday morning, saying that the central government’s attempt to pass the bill in “haste” is “unfair”.
He said that if the government “misuse” this law, his party will support the Muslim community.
Mayawati tweeted, “The sad thing is that the government brought this bill in a hurry and passed it, which is not appropriate and now that the bill has passed, if the governments misuse it, the party will support the Muslim community, that is, in such a situation the party does not agree with this bill.”
The BSP chief argued that the Central Government should have introduced the bill only after giving additional time to the public and resolving their doubts.
Mayawati said, “After listening to both the ruling party and the opposition on the Waqf Amendment Bill in Parliament, it has been concluded that it would have been better if the Central Government would give the public some more time to understand it and solve all their doubts before introducing this bill.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Friday that the passage of Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2025 is a “important moment” and this will help marginalized people who have been “deprived of both voice and opportunity.”
Prime Minister Modi wrote on X, “The passage of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill and the Muslim Waqf (Dismal) Bill by both houses of Parliament is an important moment in our collective discovery for socio-economic justice, transparency and inclusive development. This will help those who have been marginalized for a long time and thus have been deprived of both voice and opportunity.”
Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition (LOP) and Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge in the Rajya Sabha attacked the Central Government after the Parliament passed the Waqf Amendment Bill 2025, saying that the government has adopted “negative stance”.
Kharge told reporters, “This is their interpretation, we put their views on the bill in front of them (government). They have taken a negative attitude and they are taking it forward.”
Congress MP Ranjit Ranjan said that it is “unfortunate” that the Waqf Amendment Bill 2025 has been passed.
Ranjan said, “This bill is not in the interest of the nation and the Constitution … The intention with which he amended the Waqf Amendment Bill shows that they are not helping. They are just targeting a particular community. This bill is not correct.”
The Parliament passed the Marathon and the heated argument on Friday morning after the Marathon and the Gramf Amendment Bill 2025. Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar said, “Yes in 128 and no 95, Zero in absentee. Bill has been passed.”
The House remained sitting even after midnight to pass the bill.
Union Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju accused the opposition parties of misleading people on the Waqf Amendment Bill and said that this would benefit crores of people of the Muslim community.
Responding to the debate on the bill on the bill in the Rajya Sabha, Riziju said that several suggestions made by the Joint Parliamentary Committee have been included in the revised bill.
Rijiju said that the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025 will be renamed as expectation (integrated Waqf Management Empowerment Efficiency and Development) Bill. The Lok Sabha on Wednesday discussed the Waqf (Amendment) Bill and passed it after midnight after the marathon debate.
The government introduced the amended bill after including the recommendations of the Joint Parliamentary Committee, investigating the law introduced in August last year. The Bill aims to amend the 1995 Act and improve the administration and management of Waqf properties in India.
The Bill aims to remove the shortcomings of the previous Act, increase the efficiency of Waqf boards, improve the registration process and increase the role of technology in the management of Waqf records.
