New Delhi, March 17 (IANS). The government said in Parliament on Monday that 90.60 lakh houses have been given to people living in slums in cities under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Urban (PMAY-U) till 3 March 2025.
In response to a question in the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State Tokhan Sahu in the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs said that a total of 118.64 lakh houses have been approved by the Ministry under PMAY-U, out of which 112.46 lakh houses have been started and 90.60 lakh houses have been completed or have been distributed to the beneficiaries by 3 March 2025.
He said that the duration of the scheme to complete the sanctioned houses has been extended by 31 December 2025 to complete the funding patterns and implementation method.
The Minister of State said that the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MOHUA) has been assisting states/union territories by providing central assistance under PMAY-U since June 25, 2015, so that pucca houses can be provided in urban areas including slums across the country.
Minister of State Sahu said that by learning from the nine years of experiences of PMAY-U, the Ministry has given a new look to the scheme and has launched a mission for one crore additional eligible beneficiaries from September 1, 2024.
The Minister of State said that so far 30 states/union territories have signed a memorandum of MoU (MOA) and such states/union territories have been given in -principle approval of 6.77 lakh houses.
According to government data, a total of 6.54 crore people of 1.39 crore families are living in slums across the country.
This figure of families living in slums is based on the final census in 2011.
