Greater Noida, Sep 11 (IANS) Semiconductor industry leaders on Wednesday said India can become a global hub for chip manufacturing with a long-term vision and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government is moving in the right direction.
There are tremendous opportunities for chip manufacturing companies in India, Rutger Wiesberg, COO and Management Board Member of Infineon Technologies, Germany’s largest semiconductor maker, told IANS on the sidelines of the ‘Semicon India 2024’ event here, which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
“In my discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, I got to know about the work being done by the country in the field of semiconductors. There is a huge demand for semiconductors in India and companies like ours can help build a local supply chain,” Wijborg said.
The country aims to become a $110 billion semiconductor industry by 2030, accounting for 10 percent of global demand.
Wijberg said there is a huge potential for the use of chips not only in the country but also in global markets.
He said, “India can become a global semiconductor hub with a long-term vision and I am confident that the Indian government is taking this goal very seriously.”
According to Koji Wada, managing director of Fujifilm India, the government’s policy regarding semiconductors is very friendly and with proper support the chip industry can flourish in the country. He said, “We want to work together and grow in India.”
Win Chan of AGM Group said the Semicon India event is very impressive, with a lot of companies participating and a lot of customers coming in. “The event is really important for the companies involved,” he said.
More than 600 exhibitors and over 100 global companies are participating in the three-day ‘Semicon India 2024’. Organising this event in the country by ‘SEMI’ in partnership with Messe München India, Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) and Digital India is a validation of India’s emergence as a global semiconductor powerhouse.
