Moscow, October 21 (IANS). Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said India, Brazil and African countries should be given representation in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on a permanent basis to ensure representation of the global majority.
Lavrov said this during an interview with AIF.ru, state news agency Tass reported on Sunday.
“Representatives of countries like India, Brazil as well as Africa should remain in the Security Council on a long-term permanent basis. This is necessary to ensure representation of the global majority,” Lavrov was quoted as saying.
Last month, in the high-level meeting of the United Nations General Assembly, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer had also said something similar. He supported the inclusion of India as a permanent member in the reconstituted Security Council, as well as giving permanent representation to African countries, Brazil, Japan and Germany and more seats for elected members.
French President Emmanuel Macron has supported India’s inclusion as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). He also supported the claims of Germany, Japan, Brazil and two African countries.
Addressing the general debate at the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on September 26, Macron said, ‘Germany, Japan, India and Brazil should be permanent members, as well as two countries that Africa should be able to represent. Will nominate for. Newly elected members should also be included.”
India’s demand for permanent membership of the UNSC has received support from other global leaders, including Joe Biden. The US President reiterated Washington’s full support for India’s bid during his recent bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
