Gaza, Sep 1 (IANS) The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have claimed to have killed Palestinian Islamic Jihad’s (PIJ) Central Camp Brigade commander Muhammad Katraui in an airstrike in the central Gaza Strip.
The IDF said in a statement on Saturday that Katraui was killed in a joint operation, Xinhua news agency reported.
The IDF carried out the operation in collaboration with Shin Bet, Israel’s intelligence agency responsible for internal security matters.
The IDF claimed that Katraui was a key player in launching rocket attacks from the central Gaza Strip towards Israel and planned various attacks against Israeli forces. The statement said he held several positions within the PIJ, including deputy brigade commander and intelligence officer.
PIJ has not yet commented on Israel’s statement.
Israel has launched a massive offensive against Hamas in the Gaza Strip since October 7, 2023, when Hamas attacked southern Israel killing nearly 1,200 people.
The death toll from Israeli attacks has reached 40,691, Gaza-based health officials said on Saturday.
