Ramallah, Sep 6 (IANS) Israeli forces killed six Palestinians in the West Bank city of Tubas, the Palestinian Medical and Security Department said.
Five Palestinians were killed on Thursday in an Israeli airstrike targeting their vehicle in Tubas, located in the northwestern West Bank, the Palestinian Health Ministry said.
The Palestinian Red Crescent Society reported that a sixth person was shot dead by Israeli forces in the Fara camp, south of Tubas. It took hours for the army to reach the victim, according to news agency Xinhua.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said it carried out a drone strike on the Fara camp on Thursday morning and three more in Tubas. The IDF said the attacks targeted Palestinian gunmen who were firing and throwing explosives at soldiers during the raid.
Tubas Governor Ahmed al-Asaad told Xinhua that the Israeli raids caused extensive damage to infrastructure and services in the Fara camp.
Israeli forces continued their offensive in Jenin for a ninth consecutive day. Mayor Nidal Obeidi said the ongoing attacks had severely damaged local infrastructure, the full extent of which was yet to be assessed.
The Palestinian Health Ministry reported that 39 Palestinians have been killed and 145 injured as a result of Israeli military operations in the West Bank since August 28. The ministry said 691 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank since the Gaza conflict began in October 2023.
According to local sources, Israeli forces withdrew from Tulkarem and its refugee camp early on Thursday amid heavy damage to the town’s infrastructure.
Tensions are running high in the West Bank due to Israel’s ongoing attack on the Gaza Strip. More than 40,800 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have been killed since October 7 last year.
Another reason for the increase in attacks is the ‘historic opinion’ of the International Court of Justice on July 19, in which Israel’s decades-long occupation of Palestinian land was declared illegal. The International Court also demanded the evacuation of all settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
