Jagdeep Dhankhar convened meeting, Nadda and Kharge invited to discuss NJAC issue

Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar on Monday to discuss the issue of judicial accountability and NJAC Act. A meeting has been called with P. Nadda and Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge.

In this regard, a source said that the Chairman has written a letter to both Nadda and Kharge regarding the meeting to be held in their room at 11:30 am.

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh had raised the issue of recovery of cash from a High Court judge’s residence, in response to which the Chairman made comments on 21 March. In this context, the Chairman has called this meeting with Nadda and Kharge.

Chairman Dhankar mentioned the system for judicial appointments on 21 March after the National Judicial Appointments Commission (NJAC) Act was passed in 2014. The Act was later quashed by the Supreme Court.

Dhankhar said in the Rajya Sabha on March 21, “All of you will remember the system that this House passed almost unanimously. There was no differences on it. All political parties had united and supported the government’s initiative.” He had said, “I want to know what is the status of the bill passed by the Indian Parliament, which was approved by 16 state assemblies of the country and which was signed by the Hon’ble President under Article 111 of the Constitution.”

The Chairman had said, “The historic bill passed by this Parliament with unprecedented consent in the parliamentary history of this country had very serious provisions to deal with the disease. If the disease had been abolished, we might not have to face such issues.” Dhankhar had said that he would “discuss the Leader of the House and the Leader of Opposition”.
