Jammu, January 11 (IANS). Omar Abdullah on Friday launched the Jammu and Kashmir Right to Information (RTI) online portal, an important step towards increasing transparency and accountability in governance.
Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Kumar Choudhary, Cabinet Ministers Sakina Itu, Javed Ahmed Rana and Javed Ahmed Dar, Chief Secretary Atal Dullu, Additional Chief Secretary to the Chief Minister Dheeraj Gupta, Administrative Secretaries and senior officers were present in this inauguration ceremony organized at the Civil Secretariat.
Speaking on the occasion, Omar Abdullah congratulated the officials involved in the development of the portal and emphasized its transformative potential in simplifying the RTI application process for citizens.
He said this initiative will provide easier access to government information under the RTI Act, empowering citizens with a faster, more transparent and cost-efficient mechanism.
The CM also urged the officials to ensure wide publicity of this initiative so that the citizens of Jammu and Kashmir are aware of its benefits.
Developed by the National Informatics Center (NIC) of Jammu and Kashmir, the portal brings about a shift from manual to online RTI applications. This change enables citizens to submit RTI requests, track their status and receive replies electronically, eliminating the need to physically visit government offices.
Earlier, General Administration Department (GAD) Secretary M Raju gave a presentation on the features of the portal, highlighting its accessibility, convenience, speed of processing, cost efficiency and role in promoting accountability. He outlined the key functionalities of the portal, including its user-friendly interface, streamlined RTI workflow and robust documentation features.
A unique feature of the portal is the issuance of registration numbers to applicants for future reference via SMS and email, thereby enabling easy tracking of RTI applications. The portal integrates 61 government departments, 272 nodal officers/public authorities, 720 First Appellate Authorities (FAAs) and 3,419 Central Public Information Officers (CPIOs) and Public Information Officers (PIOs), ensuring comprehensive coverage and providing citizens access to information from the government.
