Justice Bhushan Ramakrishna Gavai will be the next CJI of the country, Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal gave information

New Delhi, 29 April (IANS). Justice Bhushan Ramakrishna Gavai will be the next Chief Justice of the country. This information was given by Union Minister of State for Law and Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Arjun Ram Meghwal on social media platform X.

Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal said in his X post, “Using the powers provided by the Constitution of India, Justice Bhushan Ramakrishna Gavai, the Supreme Court of India, would be appointed as the next Chief Justice of India, will be effective from May 4, 2025.”

Justice Gawai’s term will be six months ten days and will retire on 23 November 2025. He will be the second Dalit Chief Justice of the country. Before him, Justice K. Yes. Balakrishnan was holding this position.

According to the information given on the official website of the Supreme Court, Justice Bhushan Ramakrishna Gavai was born on 24 November 1960 in Amravati, Maharashtra. He stepped into the world of advocacy on 16 March 1985 and initially the late king S.K. Bhonsle, who has been a former Advocate General and Judge of the High Court, worked with him. From 1987 to 1990, he practiced independent in the Bombay High Court, and then mainly advocating various cases before the Nagpur bench.

Constitutional and administrative laws have been their major areas. He has been a permanent lawyer of Nagpur Municipal Corporation, Amravati Municipal Corporation and Amravati University. Apart from this, he continued to appear in court regularly for autonomous bodies like SICOM, DCVL and city councils of Vidarbha region. From August 1992 to July 1993, he was appointed as Assistant Public Prosecutor and Additional Public Prosecutor in Nagpur Peeth. Later, on 17 January 2000, he was appointed as a government lawyer and public prosecutor.

On 14 November 2003, he became an additional judge of the Bombay High Court and was promoted as a permanent judge on 12 November 2005. He presided over a variety of cases in Nagpur, Aurangabad and Panaji along with the main bench of Mumbai. On 24 May 2019, he was appointed a judge of the Supreme Court of India.

In his six -year tenure, Justice Gawai has been part of around 700 benches, in which he worked on matters related to constitution, administrative, civil, criminal, commercial, environment and education. He has given many important decisions, including many constitutional historical decisions, which are associated with the fundamental rights and human rights of citizens.

Justice Gawai has represented India at international conferences in cities like Ulaanbatar (Mongolia), New York (America), Cardiff (UK) and Nairobi (Kenya). He has also given lectures on constitutional and environmental subjects in various prestigious institutions including Columbia University and Harvard University. He will retire on 23 November 2025.
