Madhya Pradesh by-election: Case registered against three Congress leaders including Digvijay Singh for sharing old video of BJP candidate

Bhopal, October 27 (IANS). An FIR has been registered against three Congress leaders, including former Chief Minister Digvijay Singh, for sharing an old video of Ramniwas Rawat, the BJP candidate for the by-election in Madhya Pradesh’s Vijaypur Assembly seat.

Sheopur resident BJP leader Arvind Singh has lodged a written complaint in a police station in Sheopur district. He alleged that Congress leaders have shared Rawat’s six-year-old video to tarnish his image.

Apart from Digvijay Singh, Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Umang Singhar and Deputy Leader Hemant Katare are also named in the complaint. Singh claimed that the three Congress leaders shared Rawat’s video on their social media accounts on Friday.

“The three Congress leaders have been booked under Section 223 of the BNS-2023, which carries a punishment of one month’s imprisonment or a fine of Rs 200,” a police officer said.

Madhya Pradesh BJP chief V.D. Sharma said that Congress has nothing to challenge the BJP candidate in the by-election, hence they have brought the old video.

Sharma said, “If they (Congress) have the courage then they should contest the by-elections on the issue of development. But they will not do so because they have nothing to challenge BJP candidate Ramniwas Rawat. Such activities will harm Congress every day.” -Taking you down day by day.”

In the video, Ramniwas Rawat is arguing with someone and asking them not to vote for him.

Senior leader Ramniwas Rawat has won six assembly elections between 1990 and 2023 on Congress ticket. He had resigned from the Congress and the state assembly after winning the assembly elections in November last year.

Rawat joined the BJP during the Lok Sabha elections and was later made the state forest minister in the BJP government led by Chief Minister Mohan Yadav in Madhya Pradesh. The BJP has fielded Rawat from his stronghold Vijaypur against Congress candidate Vijaypur Malhotra, who joined the Congress a few months ago.

By-elections to two assembly seats in Madhya Pradesh – Vijaypur and Budhni – are to be held on November 13 and the results will be declared on November 23.
