Maharashtra Election 2024: Of the 4136 candidates contesting the Maharashtra Assembly elections, 490 are from national parties, 496 are from state parties, 1063 are from registered unrecognized parties and 2087 candidates are contesting as independents. Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and Maharashtra Election Watch have analyzed the self-affidavits of 2201 out of 4136 candidates contesting in the Maharashtra 2024 Assembly elections and have given several important information.

Candidates with criminal background

Out of the 2201 candidates whose affidavits have been analyzed by ADR, 629 i.e. 29 percent candidates have declared criminal cases against themselves. And 412 (19 per cent) have declared serious criminal cases. In the 2019 Maharashtra Assembly elections, 600 (19 per cent) candidates had declared serious criminal cases against themselves.

Talking about party-wise candidates with criminal cases, among the major parties, 102 (68 per cent) out of 149 candidates analyzed were from BJP, 59 (58 per cent) out of 101 candidates analyzed were from Congress, Shiv Sena (Uddhav Thackeray) 63 (66 per cent) out of 95 candidates analyzed, 51 (61 per cent) out of 84 candidates analyzed from NCP-Sharadchandra Pawar, out of 81 candidates analyzed from Shiv Sena Of the 52 (64 per cent) and 59 candidates analyzed from the NCP, 32 (54 per cent) have declared criminal cases against themselves in their affidavits.

Among serious criminal cases, 57 (38 per cent) out of 149 candidates analyzed were from BJP, 35 (35 per cent) out of 101 candidates analyzed were from Congress, 40 (42 per cent) out of 95 candidates analyzed were from Shiv Sena (Uddhav Thackeray), NCP- 28 (33 percent) out of 84 candidates analyzed from Sharad Pawar, 34 (42 percent) out of 81 candidates analyzed from Shiv Sena and 59 analyzed from NCP. Of the candidates, 22 (37 per cent) have declared serious criminal cases against themselves in their affidavits.

– 50 candidates have declared cases related to crime against women.

– Out of 50 candidates, 2 candidates have declared charges related to rape (IPC section 376).

– 6 candidates have declared cases related to murder (IPC section 302) against themselves.

– 39 candidates have declared cases related to attempt to murder (IPC section 307 and BNS section 109) against them.

The share of assets among the candidates contesting in the Maharashtra Assembly elections 2024 is as follows:

– Out of 2201 candidates analyzed, 829 (38 per cent) are crorepatis. In the 2019 assembly elections, out of 3112 candidates, 1007 (32 per cent) were crorepatis.

– Talking about party-wise crorepati candidates, among the major parties, 144 (97 percent) out of 149 candidates analyzed are from BJP, 94 (93 percent) out of 101 candidates analyzed from Congress, 94 out of 95 candidates analyzed from Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray). (99 per cent), out of 84 candidates analyzed from NCP-Sharad Chandra Pawar, 80 (95 per cent) out of 81 candidates analyzed from Shiv Sena Of the 59 candidates analyzed from 79 (98 per cent) and NCP, 58 (98 per cent) have declared assets worth more than Rs 1 crore.

– The average assets of each candidate contesting the election is Rs 9.11 crore. In the 2019 assembly elections, the average assets per candidate for 3112 candidates was Rs 4.21 crore.

– The average assets per candidate for the 149 BJP candidates analyzed is Rs 53.98 crore, the average assets per candidate for the 81 Shiv Sena candidates analyzed is Rs 29.02 crore, the average assets of the 101 Congress candidates is Rs 25.29 crore, the 84 NCP-Sharad Chandra Pawar candidates The average asset is Rs 24.54 crore, the average asset of 59 NCP candidates is Rs 22.99 crore and 95 Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) has an average wealth of Rs 15.28 crore.

Top 3 candidates with highest declared assets

– Parag Shah, BJP candidate from Ghatkopar East seat of Mumbai suburb – declared assets worth more than Rs 3383 crore.

– Prashant Ramsheth Thakur, BJP candidate from Panvel, Raigarh – declared assets worth more than Rs 475 crore.

– Mangal Prabhat Lodha, BJP candidate from Malabar Hill in Mumbai city – declared assets worth more than Rs 447 crore.

– There are 26 candidates who have declared zero assets.

Among the three candidates with the least assets, Ajay Bhojraj Mandpe, an independent candidate from Amravati’s Badnera seat, is at the top, who has declared assets worth only Rs 2,000. Vijay Manohar Srivas, an independent candidate from the same seat, is in second place and has also declared assets worth only Rs 2,000. At third place is Altaf Khajamia Syed, who is an independent candidate from Parli seat of Beed. He has also declared assets worth only Rs 2,000.

– 1034 (47%) candidates have declared their educational qualification between 5th and 12th class, while 1025 (47%) candidates have declared their educational qualification as graduation or above. 74 candidates are diploma holders. 58 candidates have declared themselves only literate and 10 candidates have declared themselves illiterate.

– 686 (31%) candidates have declared their age between 25 to 40 years, while 1196 (54%) candidates have declared their age between 41 to 60 years. 317 (14%) candidates have declared their age between 61 to 80 years. There are 2 candidates who have declared their age to be more than 80 years.

– 204 (9%) women candidates are contesting in Maharashtra Assembly elections 2024. In the 2019 Maharashtra Assembly election, out of 3112 candidates analyzed, 235 (8%) were women.
