Mamata Banerjee wrote a letter to PM Modi again, saying- 'The culprits should be punished in a way that sets an example'

Kolkata, Aug 30 (IANS) In the rape and murder case of a junior doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has once again written a letter to Prime Minister Modi to ensure justice for the victim’s family and strict punishment for the culprits.

She gave this information by sharing the picture of the letter in a post on the social media platform X. Earlier, she had also written a letter to the Prime Minister on 22 August.

In her letter, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, citing her letter dated August 22, wrote that she has not received any reply from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to her letter, in which she had discussed the need to make strict central laws on rape incidents and to give severe punishment to the criminals.

However, he has mentioned in his letter that his letter has been answered by the National Ministry of Women and Child Development, Government of India.

In his letter, he further mentioned the work done by the state government on women’s issues. He said, “Regarding Fast Track Special Courts (FTCs), 10 special POCSO courts have been sanctioned by the state government. In addition, 88 FTCs and 62 POCSO designated courts across the state are functioning entirely on state funding. The monitoring and disposal of the cases is completely in the hands of the courts.”

Apart from this, while talking about working for the people of the state machinery across the state, she demanded the Center to make such laws on heinous crimes like rape and murder of women, which set an example. She said, “I request to consider a strict central law and punishment on heinous crimes like rape and murder, which set an example in the society. In these cases, a specific time limit should be made mandatory for the disposal of cases by the trial authority.”

Let us tell you, earlier on August 22, Mamta Banerjee had written a letter to Prime Minister Modi. In this letter, she had demanded to make a law for strict punishment within 15 days for the accused involved in heinous cases like rape and to provide a safe environment to women.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee wrote in her letter that rape cases are reported regularly across the country. In many cases, rape is accompanied by murder. About 90 rape cases per day in the country shake the confidence and conscience of the society and the nation. To make women feel safe, there should be “stringent central laws providing exemplary punishment against persons involved in such brutal crimes” and the establishment of fast-track special courts should also be considered for speedy trial in such cases so that the hearing can be completed within 15 days.
