Manohar Parrikar (English: Manohar Parrikar Born: 13 December, 1955; Died- 17 March, 2019, Panaji) was the former Chief Minister of Goa. He was also the Defense Minister of India. He had also been a Rajya Sabha MP from Uttar Pradesh. He graduated from I.I.T. in 1978. Passed graduation examination from Mumbai. Manohar Parrikar was the first person to become the Chief Minister of any state in India, who had done IIT. Graduated from. He was awarded IIT in 2001. The title of ‘Distinguished Alumnus’ was also conferred by Mumbai.[1] Manohar Parrikar was the Chief Minister of Goa four times.
Manohar Parrikar’s full name is ‘Manohar Gopalkrishna Prabhu Parrikar’. He was born on 13 December 1955 in Mapusa, Goa. He completed his schooling in Margao. After this I.I.T. Engineering from Mumbai and completed his graduation in 1978. Parrikar has two sons, Utpal and Abhijat. While Abhishek runs his business in Goa, his son Utpal has taken an engineering degree from America. Parrikar’s wife Medha is no more in this world. His wife died due to cancer in 2001.
I.I.T. Manohar Parrikar’s journey from his studies to becoming the Chief Minister of Goa and Defense Minister was quite interesting. Parrikar has so far completed this journey of ups and downs with great wisdom. His political journey started in the year 1994 when he was elected MLA of Goa Assembly. On 24 October 2000, he was appointed Chief Minister of Goa and held this office till 27 February 2002. After this, in June 2002, he was again elected Chief Minister of the state.[1] On 29 January 2005, his government went into minority. But Manohar Parrikar wisely made a comeback in the 2012 assembly elections by winning 24 assembly constituencies with the BJP. He remained the Chief Minister of Goa till 8 November 2014. After this he achieved an important post at the Centre.
The current Chief Minister of Goa, Manohar Parrikar is famous for his simplicity. Despite holding the highest post in Goa, Parrikar often tours the region on a scooter with his MLAs. Even when he attends any event, he arrives in simple attire. A person close to Parrikar says that once Parrikar had to go to a five-star hotel to attend a program, but his car broke down on time.[2] He immediately called a taxi and reached the hotel wearing simple clothes and slippers. As soon as he got down from the taxi, the hotel concierge stopped him and said that he could not go inside. So Parrikar told the concierge that he is the Chief Minister of Goa, hearing this the concierge started laughing loudly and said, ‘If you are the Chief Minister then I am the President of the country.’ Meanwhile, the organizers of the program reached the spot and resolved the matter.
Seeing his ability in the Sangh, he was made the Sangh director of Goa at the age of just 26. Even during the Ram Janmabhoomi movement, he was given a big responsibility in North Goa. It was Parrikar’s ability and simplicity that impressed Modi who called him from Goa and entrusted him with the responsibility of Defense Minister. Modi is impressed by Parrikar’s administrative and organizational skills.
Manohar Parrikar was holding the charge of the Chief Minister of Goa despite being suffering from cancer for several months. It was first reported that his health was deteriorating on the evening of March 17, 2019, but after some time his death was confirmed.
