New Delhi, Sep 15 (IANS) The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi is preparing to implement the “One Nation, One Election” policy before the end of its current term, highly placed sources told IANS.
Sources revealed that the government is optimistic about implementing the ‘One Nation, One Election’ policy in its current term. The government hopes to get enough support for this reform with the support of its allies.
Proponents of ‘One Nation, One Election’ argue that it will lead to more effective governance.
In his Independence Day speech this year, PM Modi had urged political parties to come together to support this initiative. He said that frequent elections affect development work.
The concept of simultaneous elections was a major resolution in the election manifesto of the BJP.
The process of ‘One Nation, One Election’ is gaining momentum after a panel headed by former President Ram Nath Kovind submitted a report earlier this year.
The panel submitted its report to President Draupadi Murmu and strongly supported the concept of holding simultaneous Lok Sabha and Assembly elections.
Information given by top sources on Sunday said that the government has also started preparations for the census, but a decision has not yet been taken on including the caste column in the survey.
“The decennial census will be held soon,” sources said.
India has been conducting a census every decade since 1881. The first phase of this decadal census was scheduled to begin on April 1, 2020, but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
